Energy and Everyday Life

Oil and natural gas is part of every Canadian’s life—far beyond the fuel in your car and heat in your home. From pharmaceuticals, to advanced tech like smartphones and solar panels, to everyday items like crayons and helmets—oil and natural gas contribute to our standard of living.   We know it’s never been more important for diverse industries, governments, and communities to take meaningful action—together—to support Canadian families for generations to come.   We continue to invest in research, development and innovation to reduce emissions and support British Columbia’s economy and communities.

Spotlight:
BC Natural Gas
British Columbia produces one-third of Canada’s natural gas, which is anticipated to become the world’s second-largest energy source by 2040, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA)’s world energy outlook. Around the world and at home in BC, we are finding innovative ways to use natural gas to reduce our carbon footprint. For example, BC Ferries’ newest fleet ofliquified natural gas (LNG)-fuelled ferrieshas made everyday transportation more efficient  while reducing their GHG emissions by 15% – 25%.

Responsible oil and natural gas development has been an economic cornerstone of British Columbia since the 1950s. Over the years, the industry in the province has become a global leader in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, while creating quality jobs, advancing Indigenous Reconciliation and improving opportunities for all British Columbians.  When we create and use energy with a sustainability lens, we not only secure our food supply, support access to safe, affordable housing, and reinforce national security—we help take needed action in the fight against climate change. As leaders in innovative emissions reduction technology, British Columbia’s oil and natural gas producers are committed to achieving each of these goals and will continue collaborating with partners and investing in research and development to reimagine our sustainable energy future.
